#HumlyHumans – Copywriter
Trenton - Copywriter, Humly UK
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
I’m a work in progress.
How long have you worked for Humly?
I started in October 2022, so long enough that I now go by Trent only.
What’s the most challenging part of your job, and how do you usually challenge it?
Finding the Humly in everything I do. Working in marketing, I spend my time creating ideas for campaigns, doing social media, writing for our website, and finding creative solutions that answer business needs (wow, I’m busy). But my work only works if it brings Humly’s brand alive for our audience. An idea might be funny or dynamic, but if it fails to do that – it simply fails.
From your experiences as copywriter at Humly, what do you believe are some of the most essential skills or attributes needed to thrive in this role?
First one’s easy – listening. The most important quality a communicator must have is the ability to actively listen. Understanding the needs, wants, joys, and pain points of our audience gives us the road map a Sat-Nav for all of our marketing efforts. Collaboration is another biggie. Marketing relies on the operations team, the data team, the talent team, the product team, and every team-team, really. They all have unique intersections with our educators, so understanding and harnessing their insights means I don’t start from a knowledge base of zero. And that’s huge, personally, as I became a writer to avoid numbers. Finally, boldness. It’s my job to help make dynamic, powerful, and memorable impressions. We have to do interesting things that help Humly cut through the noise and stand out from the supply crowd.
What’s one professional achievement you’re most proud of?
Helping create and launch Humly UK’s educator referral programme: Refer-a-Friend-or-Foe. Every supply company has a referral programme, and they’re all the same. So we needed ours to be different. We needed ours to bring alive what makes Humly better for educators– at Humly, you’re in control.
What do you do outside of work to unwind?
I’m a dad to the most wonderful, charming, gorgeous, brilliant, and sweet three-year-old girl (there’s a teensy-weensy chance I’m biassed). So when I’m not busy working, I’m watching tons of Bluey, going to soft play, park play, swim play, you know, all the major plays.
Where is your favourite travel destination?
The place I haven’t been to yet.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I have 14 toes – kidding. I wish I had something that dynamic. But what I can honestly share is that I’m American. And I get asked all the time about the main differences between the UK and the States, so here are a few big ones: Unless you live in NYC, Chicago, or San Francisco, you need a car to get anywhere. But driving is infinitely easier in the States –roads are bigger, and parking is everywhere(and usually free). Much of the US is 24/7 (Target, Wal-Mart, restaurants), so it’s a more convenient way of life. But the UK creates a fairer one with the NHS and a generous annual leave.
